Suzanne McKichan, D.V.M.
Dr. Suzanne McKichan (pronounced McKeegan or McKigan—blame the Scots) is the newest veterinarian at Athens Veterinary Service. Dr. Suzanne grew up in Stoughton, WI (near Madison) where she was exposed to veterinary medicine by being a volunteer kennel cleaner/dog walker at a local clinic. She also developed a passion for horses and acquired a pony in fifth grade. Through middle school and high school she spent all of her free time with her pony, and later, a Quarter Horse. Choosing large animal veterinary medicine was an easy decision because it allowed her to combine her love of animals and the outdoors with her interest in science and medicine. She completed her undergraduate animal science and veterinary medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her main interest is equine medicine and she was able to receive training at a handful of specialty equine practices around the country. Dr. Suzanne is particularly interested in lameness and critical care. Besides working on horses, she helps with sick cow work and small animal emergencies. She is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practioners, Wisconsin Equine Practitioners Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Another area of interest is international and cross-cultural veterinary medical outreach. She was also able to work with indigenous villages in Ecuador through Christian Veterinary Mission and will be going on more trips in the future. Ask her about it! When not working, Dr. Suzanne is usually hanging out with her husband, Ryan. They recently adopted a Dutch rabbit named Oreo while a stray kitten added himself to the mix. Besides taking care of mooching animals they like to hike, camp, watch Seinfeld reruns, and play board games. She has also become an ambassador for World Vision helping 3rd world children find sponsors. |
