Dentistry

Athens Veterinary Service offers dentistry services for your pet. Studies show that dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats. Over 75% of pets over the age of three have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is simply inflammation or infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth. Accumulation of tartar on the teeth contributes to gum recession and tooth loss. Untreated infection can spread to other parts of the body. Early prevention and treatment are key to maintaining your pet's health. Our dental services include:

  • Thorough oral examination
  • Dental cleaning- scaling and polishing of the teeth
  • Ultrasonic and hand scaling
  • Extractions
  • Dental radiographs
  • Oral health products

Dental Radiographs - X-rays of your pet's teeth are needed periodically to evaluate your pet's oral health.  X-rays also help veterinarians detect abnormalities that cannot be seen through physical examination alone.  They can also confirm the need for tooth extraction when teeth are loose or badly infected.  An X-ray prevents possible extraction if the degree of the dental disease is reversible thus preserving your pet's health!
